South East FF Federation 2011 Loch-style Qualifiers

Qualifier 1, Sunday 22nd May, Bewl Water
Qualifier 2, Sunday 19th June, Bewl Water

The South East Federation’s loch-style qualifiers enjoyed good fishing, with an average of over 6 fish per rod. The first leg saw windy conditions, which made pulling the most practical method. Winner Sean Brooks caught his 8 fish by 12.20, drifting from Ferry Point to Chingley.

The second leg made the most of lighter winds and again, fish were well spread out, with limits coming from the Cages, the Nose, and Bewl Straight as far as Dunsters. Top overall positions saw Len Childs in first place, Mike Heritage second, with Steve Collins in third place.

Ireland Win 2011 Rivers International

Rivers International

River Agivey

1st July 2011

Ireland win the Rivers International which was fished on the River Agivey, Wales came second, England third and Scotland last.

New cap Graham Lumsden was top rod for England.

Report by Mike Tinnion, Manager, Hardy/Greys Team England:

This year’s home international was hosted by Ireland on the River Agivey, a tributary of the Bann. It proved to be the perfect venue for this type of event with lots of wild trout just about everywhere on all of the beats. With heavy showers rolling through all week, the river changed in height every day but still fished extremely well.

Friday, the day of the match, saw the river at probably its lowest level of the week. A tight competition ensued as it often the case. With fifteen minutes of an hour and a half session left on “A” beat in the afternoon, we saw all four anglers with the same number of fish, so one or two fish in the last ten minutes really can make all the difference between that 1st spot and a 4th place.

With Ireland claiming first place, just pipping Wales, this was a popular result on home waters. England also just beating Scotland for 3rd. Kieron Jenkins got a magnificent four 1st placings to take the individual winning place; to crown this he also took the Mike Childs Trophy home with him for the biggest fish.

Once again, this proved to be a fantastic event fished in the true spirit of fly fishing, and with all four nations winning this competition within the last five years, it will be anyone’s match next year when it moves to the mighty Tay in Scotland.

Peninsular 2011 Rivers Qualifier

The regional qualifying round of the Rivers competition that ultimately decides who will represent England in International events was held on the 14th May at Fingle Bridge on the River Teign. The Peninsula Federation organizes this annual event and was open to anglers from all over the country.

The conditions were very similar to last year and the anglers found the fishing quite difficult,  due again to the low water condition, however there was some exceptionally skilled anglers competing. Two anglers in particular, John Tyzack from Stockport in Cheshire who has won the National Championship 5 times and local angler Lewis Hendrie. Lewis is a former Youth International who has recently been competing at senior level both showed why they are so good by catching double the amount of fish of their nearest rivals.

The quality of fishing on the River Teign, which is a part of the Upper Teign Association water, is outstanding with 135 measurable fish in difficult circumstances, up to 32cm, being caught; each fish is measured and then returned carefully to the water. The details of the size of the fish are then recorded by an independent controller, points being awarded for each fish and the overall length of the fish, these points are then totaled up at the end of the competition.

The winner of the Snowbee Perpetual trophy was local angler Lewis Hendrie, who caught 19 trout in only 31/2 hours of fishing.  The top anglers will now go on to the National Final to be held at Llangollen on the Dee in August where the top 5 anglers will represent England.

Snowbee UK Ltd again provided  sponsorship for the competition with prizes and the perpetual trophy and the Sales and Marketing Manager Simon Kidd competed and caught the longest fish, a 32cm beautifully conditioned Brown Trout also finishing 2nd postion in the afternoon session.

Below: Winner  Lewis Hendrie from Exford, near Tiverton, with the Snowbee Perpetual Trophy and the prizes presented by Snowbee UK. Lewis caught his fish by using 2 small ‘nymphs’ and letting the current drift them along, he also used a single dry fly when the fish were particularly difficult.
