Anglers over 50 with at least two International caps are required to make up a four-man Team England FF team for the World Masters Fly Fishing Championship, to be held in Chile in January 2014. There will be two days of official practice, followed by two River and two Boat four-hour competition sessions. There will be enough places for everyone who books before Friday 30th August (after this date spare boats may be allocated to other anglers). National Rivers Final 14th July 2013

The National Rivers Final fished on the East Dart and West Dart on Dartmoor was a supercharged event with competitors competing not just between themselves and the fish, but also with the extreme heat and low water! OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The length of the beats were considerable and involved long distance walking which in waders was no joke in 27 degrees.

Pre match banter was about it being a very tough match with possibly few fish caught, the actual day proved that wrong and highlighted the quality of the anglers involved, the rod average was 12 which was stunning.

The organisation of the event was superb and my congratulations go to Penisula Federation and all the people involved in organising the event and big thanks to all of the controllers.

The following are the match qualifiers.

Terry Phillips 1st (National Champion)
Andy Cliffe 2nd
Robert Brown 3rd
Simon Robinson 4th
John Tyzack 5th
Lee Bartlett 6th (Reserve)

My congratulations to the qualifiers, well deserved in such tough conditions.

On a personal note I competed in this event, and found it a real eye opener to fish this style of fishing the pots, more than challenging!

My excuse was that I fished like a real Plonker!

South East FF Loch-style Qualifier 2, Bewl Water

Sunday 23rd June Low res. Vince 1st

Windy conditions had made practice difficult the day before, and the wind only lightened slightly for the match. Fish were also preoccupied with small green midge and half-inch jelly fry in some areas, so that although they were often seen moving, they were tricky to catch. Gilliam Vermeulen finished the clear winner with an exceptional bag of 7 fish, followed by Joel Beeney on 5 fish, and Vince Brooks, Andrew Green and Mike Heritage, all on 4 fish. Vince and Andrew caught the bulk of their fish at the top of Hook Straight, which was relatively sheltered. Some good fish were moving here, with Vinces’s best going over 4lbs. This took him all round the boat, and was only landed with the co-operation of boat partner Pete Thomason.

With a combined score of 4 points, Vince Brooks took the overall top spot, followed by Joel Beeney (9pts), Nick Cox (9pts), Gilliam Vermeulen (12pts), Len Childs (14pts), Ray French (15pts), Andrew Green (16pts), Mike Heritage (21pts) and Clive Collier (22pts).

South East FF Loch-style Qualifier 1, Bewl Water

Sunday 26th May Vince Brooks pic

Vince Brooks made the most of a tactical move from Monty’s Seat to Rosemary Lane to take the top spot in the first of the South East Federation’s loch-style qualifiers on Bewl Water, ahead of boat partner Nick Cox. On a day that saw light winds and mostly bright conditions, 28 anglers returned an impressive average of more than 5 fish per head, with 8 finishers. Clear water conditions saw buzzers and nymphs take a lot of fish, although Boobies and Blobs also worked, fished on a variety of lines including floater, midge-tip, intermediates and DI3. A promising start saw sport slow for many as the haze burnt off, but fish started moving again when this returned in the afternoon. The second qualifier will be fished on 23rd June, with the points total from both days determining who goes through.

2013 Rivers National Allocation

Rivers National Organiser Denis Symonds (Peninsular Federation) has announced the allocated number of qualifiers for this year’s Rivers National on the River Dart, 13th-14th July.

Numbers of qualifiers from each federation are based on a percentage of their entry as regards the overall entry numbers (98), calculated against the total number of National participants (32). As an example, the North 1 qualifier was fished by 7 anglers. 98 (overall entry numbers) divided by 7 = 14 (7.14%). 32 (number in National) divided by 14, or 7.14%, = 2.29, so 2 anglers qualify for the National from the North 1 qualifier. (Note: Half+ fractions are rounded up.)

Northern Federation Rivers Qualifier, River Ure

Sunday 19th May R Ure pic

14 anglers fished the Northern Federation’s River Ure qualifier on two Bolton Castle Estates beats at Wensley, North Yorkshire. Despite very heavy rainfall Saturday morning, the river condition was falling and clearing down.

Fred Bainbridge was the overall winner and became the Northern Federation’s River Ure Champion, 2nd Simon Robinson, 3rd Robbie Bell, 4th Dave Hudson, 5th Keith McAdam and 6th Pete Scholes.

Many thanks go to the Bolton Hall Estate for allowing us to fish their superb Wensley Dale river, and to Edd Greenwood for all the help he gave the anglers and myself (organiser Paul Page) to help make the qualifier a success.

Southern Fly Fishers Loch-style Qualifier, Chew

Sunday 19th May

Alan Tonge reports that the Southern Fly Fishers enjoyed a fantastic day for fishing with the fish hard on the feed. A lot of overwintered, hard fighting fish were caught. This was the first time they tried a split Catch & Kill/Catch & Release format and it seemed to work well. Conditions were bright with a slight breeze which allowed a lot of floating line use. The majority of the fish were close in to the banks with Wick and Herons being the productive areas.

1st Dale Burgess (12 fish) 43-0-0

2nd Mark Withyman (12 fish) 42-5-0

3rd Mark Miles (12 fish) 42-1-0

4th Martin Burgess (12 fish) 41-15-0

5th Gary Haskins (12 fish) 41-5-0
