2011 Rivers National

Report by Martin Dixon, Organiser.

The National was fished on the R.Dee on the 15th & 16th August. The river had taken severe pressure in practice, so that despite a week’s closure and good water conditions the fishing was bound to be more difficult than last year.

This situation seemed likely to favour the local anglers, and this is what happened, with some notable exceptions.

Over the two days a total of 162 fish over 20cms were landed, a rod average of 5+, with grayling, brown trout and sea trout caught and returned unharmed. The largest fish were a 45cms grayling to Tom Gott and a 41cms brown trout by Andy Cliffe.

The  results were very close with only 1cm of fish length separating first and second. The qualifiers were:

1st Terry Phillips             11 fish             10 place points

2nd Phil Dixon                  9 fish             10 place points

3rd John Tyzack              11 fish             11 place points

4th Tony Baldwin             8 fish             12 place points

5th Mike Dixon                 6 fish             12 place points

6th Scott Nellins               6 fish             16 place points (Reserve)

The qualifiers employed a range of tactics. The winner fished nymphs and dries, whereas the Dixon brothers caught all their fish on weighted nymphs. Messrs Tyzack and Baldwin, however, used dry flies throughout.

Many thanks to the Maelor and Llangollen clubs for the use of their excellent waters.

2011 Loch-style National – confirmed places

The allocation for qualifying places in the 2011 Loch-style National (Saturday 3rd September, Grafham Water) has now been confirmed.

With 100 places available, and a total entry of 345, the allocation for each qualifier is worked out by dividing the qualifier entry by 3.45, with the figure obtained being rounded up or down as necessary. Regardless of the size of entry, this ratio – 3.45:1 – remains the same.

Loch Style Manager Required

This year we found ourselves in a position where we had no loch style manager, John Horsey volunteered to manage the Spring match and Richard Slater the Autumn match,  both on a one off basis.

I would personally, and on the behalf of TEFF like to thank them for their contribution.

As this was a short term solution, we really need to recruit a permanent loch style manager, the candidate will need communication and organisational skills plus the free time to attend the two matches which are being held in Ireland and Wales next year.

If you would like to apply please email me.

2011 Team England Bank Squad Day

A day was organised for a get-together to familiarise the team taking part in the Bank International on Barfinnihy Lake, Kenmare, Ireland in October.

The venues selected were Waskerley and Smiddy Shaw reservoirs, Co Durham. The fishing was arranged by Graham Robinson and members of the North West Durham Anglers Syndicate.

Despite strong winds and bright sunshine, fish were landed at both venues. The opportunity was also taken for a brief team talk by Manager Alan Jenkins, along with the presentation of Team England shirts and badges to new caps Bart Farmer and Rob Frame.

Preparations are now well in hand for the second Bank International which will be held on 19th October 2011, organised by hosts Trout Anglers Federation Ireland (TAFI).

Qualifier 1, Sunday 22nd May, Bewl Water
Qualifier 2, Sunday 19th June, Bewl Water

The South East Federation’s loch-style qualifiers enjoyed good fishing, with an average of over 6 fish per rod. The first leg saw windy conditions, which made pulling the most practical method. Winner Sean Brooks caught his 8 fish by 12.20, drifting from Ferry Point to Chingley.

The second leg made the most of lighter winds and again, fish were well spread out, with limits coming from the Cages, the Nose, and Bewl Straight as far as Dunsters. Top overall positions saw Len Childs in first place, Mike Heritage second, with Steve Collins in third place.

Ireland Win 2011 Rivers International

Rivers International

River Agivey

1st July 2011

Ireland win the Rivers International which was fished on the River Agivey, Wales came second, England third and Scotland last.

New cap Graham Lumsden was top rod for England.

Report by Mike Tinnion, Manager, Hardy/Greys Team England:

This year’s home international was hosted by Ireland on the River Agivey, a tributary of the Bann. It proved to be the perfect venue for this type of event with lots of wild trout just about everywhere on all of the beats. With heavy showers rolling through all week, the river changed in height every day but still fished extremely well.

Friday, the day of the match, saw the river at probably its lowest level of the week. A tight competition ensued as it often the case. With fifteen minutes of an hour and a half session left on “A” beat in the afternoon, we saw all four anglers with the same number of fish, so one or two fish in the last ten minutes really can make all the difference between that 1st spot and a 4th place.

With Ireland claiming first place, just pipping Wales, this was a popular result on home waters. England also just beating Scotland for 3rd. Kieron Jenkins got a magnificent four 1st placings to take the individual winning place; to crown this he also took the Mike Childs Trophy home with him for the biggest fish.

Once again, this proved to be a fantastic event fished in the true spirit of fly fishing, and with all four nations winning this competition within the last five years, it will be anyone’s match next year when it moves to the mighty Tay in Scotland.
