RESULTS

“This year’s National Loch-style Final was fished at Rutland Water over two days on 21st and 22nd September from 10.00am to 5.30pm. Day 1 started with bright sunshine and a cool North Easterly wind – not ideal fly fishing conditions. Most boats chose to fish an area in the middle of the South Arm outside the Sailing Club and across to Spud Bay and Yellowstone. By mid-afternoon the sun had gone and it had turned humid with a thunderstorm threatening. The worst scenario for an angler in open water! The heavens opened at around 4.00pm with lightning and most of the anglers stopped fishing, some returning to the boat dock and the rest to a nearby shore. First time finalist Mark Parsley was top angler on Day 1 with a fantastic catch of 12 trout. The rod average was a mere 3.5 fish that showed just what a challenging day’s fishing it had been.
Day 2 saw fresher but very wet weather – it never stopped raining all day!
Most anglers remained and fished in the same areas as the previous day. It was apparent that the fishing would be even more of a challenge than Day 1. As it turned out the rod average dropped to just 2 fish.
At the weigh-in there was much anticipation and jangling nerves – it would be a tight affair.
Overall champion was Tony Fox who had 6 fish on Day 1 and 5 on Day 2 – very consistent angling. Second place went to the very experienced and consistent angler Tony Baldwin who also took 6 fish on Day 1 and 5 on Day 2. Third place went to Samantha Edmunds who had 8 fish on Day 1 and backed that up with a creditable 4 fish on Day 2.
The overall result produced 6 new caps – well done to them
Thanks must go to Anglian Water for hosting the event, the catering team at the fishing lodge for providing food afterwards, to the volunteers that helped the match organiser, and finally to Peter Hartley who organises the heats and contributed hugely to the organisation of the final.”
Ian Colclough – joint event organiser.
